Day 6

Everyone says that Saskatchewan is boring to drive through because it is so flat.  But both Solly and I believe from Winnipeg to Brandon is worse.  After rising from another good nights sleep and packing the tent, we quickly grabbed coffee in Rivers.  By the way, Northern Ontario was brutally cold to sleep in, we practically didn’t get any sleep, but since moving out of Ontario we have had great sleeps and the temperature has not dropped significantly at night.

From rivers, we had to find our way back to Hwy 1 – Trans Canada Hwy.  I don’t do well with directions and we didn’t take the right turn so we decided just head south towards the highway and we drove into a scene that looked like it was out of the movie Chernobyl diaries.  The fire trucks were all old and the glass windows were all smashed in.  Abandoned buildings surrounded the broken down vehicles.  As we were taking photos with the truck, we could hear a dog barking and it sounded like it was getting closer and closer.  We decided to leave before we ran into ravage dogs, who were hungry! LOL

While heading south, we noticed a couple of falcons sitting on fence posts.  Solly tried to take a photo but they flew away.  Then we noticed an old broken down bridge, which was quite interesting.

Along the way to Regina, we stopped for gas and saw a few historic buildings.  We also pulled over in Indian Head, which is the where Little Mosque on the Prairie is filmed.

Driving through Saskatchewan we realized several things:

  1. Its not as flat as everyone says, if you look there are rolling hills
  2. It is not as boring as driving from Winnipeg to Brandon
  3. The fields are so golden during August.
  4. There are a lot of bugs being killed on my car as we drive.  When traveling across Canada you need to stop to clean the bugs off your window several times.

We spent our part of our day roaming Regina’s shopping center before heading to the Regina Cross Fit.   The speed bumps in the shopping areas are really high and kept scratching the bottom of the car no matter what speed you went. We headed over for 4pm class, but no one showed up!  So we decided we would move on to Moose Jaw.  Once arriving in Moose Jaw we headed straight for the Tunnels because I wanted to do the tour.  As we were paying we discovered that Saskatchewan does not do daylight savings time and there was another time change we were unaware of.  We had been an hour early for our workout and totally missed it! 🙁

The Chicago Connections was about how Moose Jaw was linked to Chicago during prohibition and how it was associated with booze being transported during that time.  The actors were quite humorous and involved the tourists through out the skits.  Solly and I felt like we went to the theater, those kids deserve a raise :P.

Home of the Yummy Gelato

After the tour we visited some shops and had some gelato.  Yes, I spoiled my dinner because after we had roasted chicken, veggies and hummus.  After having a good dinner, we went and saw Paranorman.  I love horror movies and I love kids movies, so the combination was amazing!!!  There are jokes for kids and adults and it’s not that scary, all the kids in the theatre were laughing.  Solly has been asking to see it a second time since. LOL  Now the debate is, which is better Despicable Me or Paranorman?

Then we headed off to the campsite.  We stayed at Rivers Campsite, which was very family oriented since there were children running around screaming their heads off.  Once our campsite was set up we had a nice little bon fire and roasted some wieners before we went to bed.
